Writing a blog engine, part 1

March 6, 2016 · 1 min

Now I have finally started working on my blog engine! The engine will essentially be a simple script that parses posts from Markdown files and renders them using an HTML template. The posts will be provided to the script by a separate git repo and a GitHub webhook. Simplicity is the key to success!

Enter Python

I have been yearning to learn Python for quite a while, and this felt like the perfect project to learn from. So how did it go?

It took a lot of time to get started. Installing the correct version of Python (I went with Python 3), reading up on and installing virtualenv and configuring everything to behave sanely. This sounds pretty straight forward, but it involved me uninstalling Python twice(!) and beginning to question the reason for my existance.

I got the main functionality up and working after a few hours of coding (mostly Googling actually, heh), and I can't wait to do more! Next up is HTML templating!

The code for the engine can be found on my GitHub.

Stay tuned!
